FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
A remote second opinion from Houston Methodist provides an opportunity for individuals to learn more about a complicated diagnosis they have received from a local doctor. Renowned U.S. experts from Houston Methodist will provide you with additional information on your diagnosis as well as possible alternative treatment options for you and your local health care provider to consider. A second opinion is not a substitute for in-person care and no physician-patient relationship is intended or created by this program. Houston Methodist physicians may not be licensed as doctors outside of the United States and are not practicing medicine when providing these informational services.
A second opinion can be an important informational and educational tool following any complicated diagnosis or treatment recommendation. Houston Methodist’s U.S. board-certified doctors will review the diagnosis and treatment recommendation you’ve received along with your relevant medical records, including imaging, to provide you with expert information and education. In many cases this second opinion will simply provide you with more information about your condition and peace of mind, but oftentimes a second opinion provides information on other possible tests or treatments to consider, potentially saving you from invasive surgery, or costly treatments without you and your health care provider first considering other options. For certain diagnosed conditions, Houston Methodist offers this service remotely, without requiring you to travel for this expert information. PLEASE NOTE: A second opinion is not a substitute for primary care or in-person care and no physician-patient relationship is intended or created by use of this program. Houston Methodist physicians may not be licensed as doctors in your home country and are not practicing medicine when providing these informational services.
Houston Methodist’s team of surgeons, physicians, researchers and other experts collaborate to solve medicine’s biggest challenges and turn discoveries into new therapies and treatments. Our drive for innovation is rooted in the legacy created by world-renowned cardiac surgeon Dr. Michael E. DeBakey. Today, Houston Methodist is well established as a leader in heart and vascular treatments, and also is known for spearheading breakthroughs in organ transplantation, orthopedics, cancer treatment and neurology and neurosurgery.
It depends on your location. In certain jurisdictions, we only provide the second opinion service in collaboration with treating providers, but in all cases it is only a service provided upon your request. Houston Methodist’s Second Opinion Program is independent of any care you are currently receiving and is only intended as an educational and informational service, not as a substitute for in-person medical care. We encourage all participants to share and discuss the second opinion information with your treating provider.
At this time Houston Methodist’s second opinion program is available remotely for individuals who have received a cancer, cardiology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, or urology related diagnosis and are 18 or older. We are regularly expanding the program to provide information on additional diagnoses. If you require a second opinion on a diagnosis other than those currently available, please contact our Second Opinion Program team directly for additional options, at 877.790.3627 or by email at secondopinion@HoustonMethodist.org.
PLEASE NOTE: Houston Methodist reserves the right to refuse to proceed with a second opinion request if it determines that the participant is not suitable for the program for any reason.
Once our team has confirmed receipt of all participant paperwork (including signed terms, consent, and release, and, where required, treating provider documentation), medical records, images and payment, your second opinion information will be available within 7 business days.
